Overview
A new boiler chosen for your home, not for a brand target
A boiler installation is more than swapping one box on the wall for another. The right boiler depends on how many bathrooms you have, how much hot water your household uses at once, the size and age of your radiators, your water pressure and where the flue can safely go. Get those decisions wrong and you end up with a boiler that short-cycles, struggles on cold mornings or wastes gas for years.
Epperstone Plumbing & Heating is an independent installer. Bradley is not tied to a single manufacturer, so he can fit a wide variety of boiler makes and models and recommend the one that genuinely matches your property. You get a straight answer on what you need, combi, system or regular, rather than a sales script.
Every installation is carried out or overseen personally by Bradley Underwood, who has 23 years in the plumbing and heating trade and is Gas Safe registered (number 977991). That means the gas work is legal, certified and registered, and the person who quotes the job is the person responsible for getting it right.
Installations are carried out across Nottingham, Mansfield and the wider Nottinghamshire area, from older village cottages around Epperstone and Southwell to modern homes in Arnold, Carlton, West Bridgford and Hucknall.
Why it matters
What happens when a boiler installation is rushed or wrongly sized
A poorly specified or badly fitted boiler rarely fails on day one. The problems show up later, in your gas bills, in breakdowns during the first cold snap, and in warranty claims that get refused.
Higher running costs
An oversized boiler cycles on and off constantly and never reaches its efficient condensing range, so you pay more for the same warmth.
Poor hot water performance
A combi that is too small for a busy household leaves showers running lukewarm when a second tap opens.
Safety risks
Incorrect flue positioning, poor gas pipework or skipped checks can create a risk of carbon monoxide or gas leaks. Gas work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Early breakdowns
Fitting a new boiler onto a dirty, sludged system without cleaning it shortens the life of pumps, valves and heat exchangers.
Invalid warranties
Manufacturers typically require correct installation, registration and regular servicing. Shortcuts can void cover when you need it most.
Repeated call-outs
Small installation errors lead to pressure loss, noisy pipes and lockouts that cost time, money and patience to chase down.
Common mistakes we see
- Choosing a boiler on headline price alone
- Picking the biggest output 'just in case'
- Skipping a system flush before the new boiler goes on
- Using an unregistered installer to save money
- Ignoring heating controls, which waste the boiler's efficiency
- Not registering the boiler or keeping up the annual service

In detail
Choosing the right boiler: combi, system or regular
Most homes in Nottinghamshire suit one of three boiler types. The right one depends on your property, your water supply and how many people need hot water at the same time.
Combi boilers
A combination boiler heats water on demand straight from the mains, so there is no hot water cylinder or loft tank. Combis suit flats and small-to-medium homes with one main bathroom, and they free up cupboard space.
Their limit is flow: if two showers run at once, performance drops. Mains water pressure and flow rate must be checked before a combi is recommended.
System boilers
A system boiler heats water stored in an unvented cylinder. Because a tank of hot water is ready to go, it suits larger homes with two or more bathrooms where several outlets are used at once.
System boilers also pair well with future renewable upgrades, such as solar thermal or a heat pump, since a cylinder is already in place.
Regular (heat-only) boilers
Regular boilers work with a hot water cylinder and cold water storage in the loft. They are common in older properties where the pipework was designed around gravity-fed systems.
Where an older system cannot easily take mains pressure, keeping a regular boiler is often the most sensible option.
Sizing, flues and controls
Boiler output is matched to your home's heat loss and hot water demand, not guessed. Flue position must meet regulations for distance from windows, doors and boundaries.
Modern controls, programmable thermostats, thermostatic radiator valves and weather or load compensation where appropriate, let the boiler run in its most efficient range.
Protecting the new boiler
Before fitting, the existing system should be cleaned to remove sludge and debris. A magnetic filter and inhibitor protect the new heat exchanger and help keep the boiler running efficiently for longer.
After installation, an annual service keeps the boiler safe and helps maintain any manufacturer warranty.
What to expect on installation day
On the day, dust sheets go down first and the area around the boiler is protected. The old appliance is isolated from gas, water and electricity, drained and removed. Pipework is adapted for the new boiler, the flue is fitted and sealed, and the condensate pipe is routed to a suitable drain with protection against freezing.
Once everything is connected, the system is refilled, bled and checked for leaks. The boiler is then commissioned: gas pressure and combustion are tested with an analyser, safety devices are checked and the controls are set up to suit your routine. You're shown how to use the thermostat, how to top up pressure if needed and what the boiler's display messages mean.

FAQs
Questions we're often asked
How much does a new boiler installation cost in Nottingham?
+
It depends on the boiler type, output, flue route and how much pipework needs changing. Bradley gives a free, no-obligation quote after seeing your home, so the price you get reflects the actual job.
How long does a boiler installation take?
+
A like-for-like swap is usually quicker than a conversion, such as moving from a regular system to a combi or relocating the boiler. You'll be given a clear timeframe with your quote.
Which boiler brands do you install?
+
As an independent installer, Bradley fits a wide variety of makes and models and recommends the best fit for your home rather than pushing one brand.
Are you Gas Safe registered?
+
Yes. Bradley is Gas Safe registered, number 977991.
Is the installation guaranteed?
+
Yes. Workmanship is guaranteed on every job. Manufacturer warranties on the boiler itself vary by make and model and usually depend on annual servicing.
Can you move my boiler to a different location?
+
Often, yes. Moving a boiler involves new gas, water and flue routes, so it is assessed during the survey and included in your quote.
How long does a new boiler last?
+
A well-installed boiler on a clean system that is serviced every year will typically last many years. Skipping servicing and system protection shortens that life.
Do you cover areas outside Nottingham?
+
Yes. We install boilers across Nottingham, Mansfield and Nottinghamshire, including Arnold, Carlton, Calverton, Southwell, West Bridgford and Hucknall.
What if my boiler breaks down out of hours?
+
Call 07779 284505 to discuss the fault and confirm call-out availability.
