Overview

A heating system designed around your home

Central heating is the network of boiler, pipework, radiators and controls that keeps your home warm. When it is designed and balanced properly, every room reaches temperature, nothing runs longer than it needs to, and your boiler works efficiently.

Many homes in Nottinghamshire have systems that grew over the years: an extension added here, a radiator moved there, controls that were never updated. The result is cold spots, noisy pipes, radiators that are only warm at the bottom, and higher bills than necessary.

Bradley designs and installs complete central heating systems and upgrades existing ones. That can mean a full new system for a property without one, new radiators sized for each room, replacing old pipework, or adding modern controls that let you heat only what you use.

With 23 years' experience and Gas Safe registration 977991, Bradley handles the whole job, boiler, pipework and controls, so the system works as one.

Why it matters

What an inefficient heating system is costing you

A tired heating system doesn't just feel uncomfortable. It wastes energy, strains your boiler and can lead to bigger repairs.

Wasted energy

Unbalanced systems and poor controls heat empty rooms and overwork the boiler.

Cold spots and damp

Rooms that never warm up properly are more prone to condensation and mould.

Sludge build-up

Corrosion debris collects in radiators and pipes, blocking flow and damaging pumps and boilers.

Noisy, unreliable heating

Kettling, banging pipes and sticking valves point to problems that worsen over time.

Leaks and damage

Old, corroded radiators and joints can leak, damaging floors and ceilings.

Shortened boiler life

A new boiler connected to a poor system won't reach its potential and may fail sooner.

Common mistakes we see

  • Replacing the boiler but ignoring the rest of the system
  • Fitting radiators by guesswork instead of sizing for each room
  • Never bleeding or balancing radiators
  • Leaving out thermostatic radiator valves and a room thermostat
  • Turning the thermostat up instead of fixing the cause
  • Ignoring a system that keeps losing pressure

In detail

Central heating systems, radiators and controls explained

Every home is different. These are the main choices and upgrades that affect comfort and running costs.

New central heating installations

A full installation includes boiler, pipe runs, radiators, valves and controls. Pipe routes are planned to keep disruption low and runs as short and tidy as practical.

For older properties, pipework can often be routed under floors to avoid surface pipes.

Radiator upgrades

Radiators are sized to each room's heat loss. Swapping undersized or corroded radiators improves comfort and lets the boiler work at lower, more efficient temperatures.

Options include convector radiators, column radiators and heated towel rails for bathrooms.

Heating controls

A programmable room thermostat, thermostatic radiator valves and a cylinder thermostat (where relevant) are the foundation of an efficient system. Smart controls add app-based scheduling and remote adjustment.

System cleaning

If radiators are cold at the bottom or the boiler water looks dark, the system likely contains sludge. Cleaning, followed by a magnetic filter and inhibitor, restores circulation and protects components.

Extensions and conversions

New rooms need heating designed in from the start, either extending the existing system, adding underfloor heating, or both. We'll check your boiler has enough capacity for the extra load.

Balancing and bleeding: why it matters

Water takes the easiest route around a heating system, so radiators closest to the boiler often get hot first while those furthest away struggle. Balancing adjusts each radiator's lockshield valve so flow is shared evenly and every room warms at a similar rate.

Air trapped in radiators creates cold patches at the top and can cause gurgling noises. Bleeding releases that air. If radiators need bleeding regularly, it can point to a leak, a faulty pressure vessel or corrosion that produces gas inside the system, all worth investigating.

Done properly, balancing and bleeding are simple ways to improve comfort and efficiency without major work.

Pipework in older homes

Many older Nottinghamshire properties still have narrow microbore pipework or a mix of steel, copper and plastic from different eras. Some of this can stay; some may restrict flow or be prone to blockages and leaks.

During a survey, Bradley looks at the condition and layout of existing pipework and advises whether sections should be replaced as part of a radiator or boiler upgrade. Replacing problem pipework while floors are up is far easier than coming back later.

Getting more from the heating you already have

Not every heating problem needs a new system. Sometimes a clean, a few correctly sized radiators and better controls deliver most of the improvement for a fraction of the cost. You'll be given honest options, from minimal changes to a full upgrade, so you can decide what makes sense for your home and budget.

Why homeowners choose Bradley for central heating

Heating problems are often blamed on the boiler when the real cause lies in the pipework, radiators or controls. Because Bradley works on the whole system, he can identify where the issue actually is and fix the cause rather than replacing parts that are working fine.

Epperstone Plumbing & Heating is owned and run by Bradley Underwood, who manages work personally with regular subcontractors supporting larger jobs. Quotes are free and carry no obligation. Bradley is Gas Safe registered (977991), holds public liability insurance with Direct Line and guarantees workmanship on every job.

Customers regularly mention clear communication, knowing what's happening, why, and what it will cost before work starts. As one Facebook reviewer put it: "At last, a plumber who can communicate, be clear and do a good job."

What to check before you agree any central heating quote

A good heating quote should explain radiator sizes for each room, what pipework is being replaced, which controls will be fitted, whether the system will be cleaned and protected, and how the system will be balanced at the end.

FAQs

Questions we're often asked

How much does central heating installation cost?

+

It depends on the size of your home, the number of radiators and whether a new boiler is needed. Quotes are free and based on a survey.

How long does a full installation take?

+

It varies with property size and layout. You'll get a clear timeframe with your quote.

Can I add radiators to my existing system?

+

Usually, yes, provided the boiler has enough capacity. We'll check this before recommending extra radiators.

Why are my radiators cold at the bottom?

+

This is usually a sign of sludge build-up. A system clean and filter normally resolves it.

Do I need new controls?

+

If you don't have a room thermostat and TRVs, adding them is one of the most cost-effective upgrades you can make.

Is the work guaranteed?

+

Yes, workmanship is guaranteed on every job.

Can you heat a new extension?

+

Yes, by extending your current system or installing underfloor heating, depending on what suits the space.

Where do you install central heating?

+

Across Nottingham, Mansfield and Nottinghamshire, including Arnold, Carlton, Calverton, Southwell, West Bridgford and Hucknall.
